“Soles for Souls”: A Success Story at Pontiac Middle School

At Pontiac Middle School, moments of impact often come in the simplest yet most meaningful ways—and the “Soles for Souls” shoe program is a powerful reminder of that truth.

Through this initiative, students were invited to the Communities in Schools (CIS) office to receive a brand-new pair of shoes tailored to their needs. What made the experience even more special was the opportunity for each student to try on multiple pairs, ensuring not only the right size, but the right fit for their confidence. The room was filled with excitement, laughter, and anticipation. With every pair tried on, smiles grew bigger—and when the perfect pair was found, the joy was undeniable. The looks on their faces were priceless, and their gratitude spoke volumes without needing many words.

Among the many students served, two remarkable young ladies stood out, Nataya and Kyianna Branford, 7th and 8th-grade students who are currently case-managed through CIS. These young ladies have faced significant challenges outside of school, yet they continue to show resilience, strength, and determination. Through consistent support, encouragement, and connection, CIS has remained a steady presence in their lives—helping them stay motivated and committed to their education.

When Nataya and Kyianna were told they would be receiving new shoes, their excitement lit up the entire room. It truly felt like Christmas in April. They eagerly tried on pair after pair, carefully choosing the ones that felt just right. But what made the moment even more special was their decision afterwar, not to take the shoes home, but to wear them proudly to class that very same day.

A conversation with their mother gave the moment even deeper meaning. Over the phone, she expressed heartfelt gratitude, moved to tears knowing that this was one less financial burden on her shoulders. That single act of kindness created space for her to meet other needs for her family.

As their case manager, witnessing this moment was both humbling and inspiring. It served as a powerful reminder that what may seem small to one person can be life-changing to another. Today, Nataya and Kyianna walk the halls of Pontiac Middle School with a renewed sense of confidence, pride, and joy—and it shows in every step they take.

This is the impact of Communities In Schools.

Thank you to Communities In Schools for consistently connecting us with the partnerships and resources that make moments like this possible. Together, we are not just meeting needs—we are building confidence, restoring hope, and changing lives one step at a time.
